Install OpenSRE on Linux (laptop, desktop, or a local VM), sign in to your account, then ask the agent your first question.

1. Install

You don’t need sudo. The installer puts opensre in ~/.local/bin (or /usr/local/bin when run as root) and adds that directory to your shell rc file.
  • Same terminal: where passwordless sudo is available (EC2 and most cloud images), the installer also links opensre into /usr/local/bin so it runs right away. Otherwise run the source command it prints, or open a new terminal.
  • GitHub CLI (gh): OpenSRE’s GitHub chat tools use gh. If it’s missing, the installer downloads GitHub’s official, checksum-verified build next to opensre. If that fails, it prints the install commands for your package manager. On Ubuntu and Debian, a plain apt install gh fails until GitHub’s apt repository is added. Set OPENSRE_SKIP_GH_INSTALL=1 to skip this step.
  • --install-dir <path>: installs only into that directory: no /usr/local/bin link.

Binary compatibility

Prebuilt Linux binaries require glibc 2.35+ (Ubuntu 22.04+ or a comparable distribution) and do not run on Alpine Linux. Use a supported Linux distribution or the Docker guide.

2. Set things up

Create an OpenSRE account or sign in to activate the hosted model. On a server or over SSH, open the printed link in a browser on any device and paste the code it shows; see Sign in over SSH or on a server. The first prompt offers a demo; pick the CI/CD analysis of a repository on this machine, or choose E to skip it. Add tools later, when you need them:
Then verify connected tools:

3. Ask the agent

Chat with it in the shell:
Ask: why is checkout latency spiking?
